Vin Diesel may not be good at keeping secrets but he is good at stirring up rumours. The star of many major motion pictures and the voice of the “Iron Giant” is rumoured to be in talks with Marvel Studios to play a talking tree named “Groot” in the back-shelf comic movie adaptation of “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Diesel fueled the rumour mill himself when he posted a picture of “Groot” on his Facebook page leaving the caption blank. This followed an earlier update where he teased fans with “Marvel meeting today. Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed.” Both updates were recently removed from his timeline, further fueling the rumours that he could still be in negotiations.
During a Comic Con panel late last month Diesel also told fans that he couldn’t talk about what was discussed with Marvel but that “there is some very big news coming at the end of this month…Poor Marvel.” Production on the film began July 2013.
The “Groot” character is an intelligent alien species that absorbs wood to gain physical strength and control other trees. While the character has few lines historically, mostly saying “I am Groot,” Diesel’s deep baritone could be an intriguing addition to the star studded cast. Marvel has yet to confirm Diesel’s involvement. At the D23 expo, Marvel revealed that Chris Pratt, Benicio del Toro, Zoe Saldana and Glenn Close are starring in the upcoming film.
